All Hail from The Auld Rock!

Last week my wife Caroline and I arrived to live and work in Baltasound, Unst, Shetland. We are now closer to Bergen than Glasgow. The island of Unst is the most northerly inhabited island in the UK. What in the name of Christ are we doing!? We must be mental. It's this far away:

See! It's that mental!

We're here because Caroline is the new art teacher at Baltsound Junior High and I need a good excuse to get me off the stand up circuit and onto the typewriter.

It takes 12hrs to sail from Aberdeen to Lerwick, then you drive for half an hour to Toft, get the 20 min ferry to Ulsta on Yell, drive another 25 minutes to Gutcher where you get ANOTHER ferry. (Here's me n the dug waiting for the ferry at Gutcher.)

That 10 min ferry takes you to Belmont, then after a 10 minute drive you are in BALTASOUND!

We live in the wee schemie bit to the left. It's a nice bit with MENTAL neighbours. The good kind of mental, though, but more about that later.

On the big 12 hr ferry from Aberdeen Meg the dog and Ffloyd the cat had to stay in the on board kennels down next to the engine room. As you can see they were ecstatic on arrival and didn't hold anything against us.
.

Stay tuned for more Nordic saga's.

Aa da best!

You really are fucking mental. Seriously, Sandy, it's just no safe up there.

Your post reminds me of the beginning of The Shining, when they're having fun checking out the hotel and the maze and that.

Give it a few months, and it'll be visions of blood pouring out of lift doors and hair of the dog that bit me, Lloyd.

Quality! Have done a few gigs up on the rock. Recommended places to visit: Twat (need a reason?) and Whalsey (you can see dolphins on the way over). Noticed how the sea looks kinda black? Must be all the peat.

Hope the Shetlag has worn off (ooft, sorry).

Looks great up there, and another benefit is that when the Zombocalypse kicks off it’s going to take years for the living dead to negotiate their way over on all those ferries.

(although that’s taking into consideration that the zombocalypse doesn’t kick off in Unst)
